
Bermuda Sailing Achievements
OLYMPIC COMPETITION
Bermuda has sent a team of Olympic Sailors to every Summer Olympics since the games in Melbourne, Australia in 1956 (excluding the Moscow boycott in 1980). Overall 57 Bermudian sailors have represented their country in 11 different classes of dinghies and keelboats. Notable performances include a 4th place finish for Peter Bromby and Lee White in the Star class at the 2000 Sydney games, 5th place finish for Alan Burland and Chris Nash in the 1984 Los Angeles games and a 5th place finish by Kirk Cooper, Penny Simmons and Richard Belvin in the Dragon class at the 1964 Tokyo games.
INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION IN LOCAL WATERS
Bermuda is recognized as venue of the highest caliber for international competition sanctioned by the world sailing governing body, ISAF. The island has adequate facilities, first class race management experience and local officials with ISAF credentials. YOUTH ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Since 1998 the Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association has made a concentrated effort to build up our Youth Sailing numbers through year round coaching and organized competition in local and foreign waters. The results speak for themselves as Bermuda is regarded as a sailing power in the Optimist dinghy world. Optimist graduates are starting to make their mark on international sailing in the Laser, Laser Radial, and 29’er and soon the 49’er classes.
